How Much Do You Tip a Yacht Charter Crew?

The standard tip for a yacht charter crew is 10% to 20% of the base charter rate. In the Caribbean and the Bahamas, the standard gratuity is 15% to 20%. In the Mediterranean and Europe, the standard tip is 10% to 15%. Gratuity is calculated strictly on the base charter fee, excluding taxes, delivery fees, and the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA).

How Do You Hand Over a Yacht Charter Tip?

  • Hand the tip directly to the Captain: Never tip individual crew members directly. Hand a single envelope containing the total gratuity to the Captain on the final morning of departure.
  • Allow the Captain to distribute the funds: The Captain splits the tip equally among all staff, including deckhands, engineers, chefs, and stewardesses.
  • Pay via cash, wire transfer, or broker setup: Cash is preferred onboard, but bank wire transfers or advance broker deposits can be arranged prior to disembarkation.

Does the tip come out of the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance)?

No. The APA strictly covers operational expenses like fuel, food, drinks, dockage, and port communications. Any unused APA is refunded to you at the end of the trip and is not automatically transferred to crew tip unless explicitly requested by the guest.

Is crew tipping mandatory on a luxury charter?

Tipping is technically discretionary, but in the luxury charter industry, it is a universally accepted custom. Crew members work 16-to-18-hour days to ensure guest safety, comfort, gourmet dining, and itinerary management.

What should you do if service fails to meet expectations?

If any issues arise during your charter, notify your High Tide broker or the Captain immediately so they can rectify the situation in real time. If service remains unsatisfactory, guests have full discretion to reduce gratuity below the 10% baseline.
